Sometimes we travel by plane. Sometimes we are traveling by plane with babies and toddlers. However, passengers occasionally find themselves with problems related to their airline luggage.

Ladies often leave manicure scissors, sharp nail files or oversize bottles of perfume in their hand bags, while men try to do with a small carryall which contains a can of shaving foam or a penknife.

They always forget about baggage restrictions. These personal items are generally confiscated at security checkpoints -something that can dampen any mood. Thankfully, these situ­ations are all easily avoidable. To avoid such unpleasant "surprises" on future trips we sug­gest taking a few extra moments to consider baggage rules for airlines, starting with items that are not allowed on board in your hand luggage.

It is strictly forbidden to check in any kind of weapon, including signal pistols, guns, gas sprays, electroshock devices (with the exception of medical equipment), knives or other sharp objects, explosives, compressed gasses, or any flammable, toxic or radio­active substances. In other words, anything that could threaten the life or health of passengers inboard must be placed in your checked baggage or it will be confiscated. At the same time, our recommendation is to carry all valuable items, such as personal ID, money, jewelery, keys, electronic devices, medications, etc. on your person. Imagine arriving at your destination and your airline luggage fails to arrive. While this situation is rare, it can occur and a lost suitcase full of souvenirs and clothes can cause a headache. But imagine arriving to your car parked at the airport only to realize that in your lost luggage were your car keys!

 

Another simple piece of advice: use handy airline lug­gage tags to write your initials, city, country and contact information in English on each piece of checked luggage - this ensures that if your bag has been delayed or misdirected it will be easy to contact you. For those whose luggage fails to come off the conveyor, do not panic! If this happens, go immediately to the Lost & Found service, the offices of which can be found in every airport arrival hall. Missing luggage can still be . quickly traced even if the bar-code tag has come off during transportation or the bag ended up on a different conveyor.

By tagging your bag in advance you facilitate in the search for your luggage. For cases in which it is not possible to find your luggage immediately, complete a Property Irregu­larity Report (PIR), and present your baggage ticket (usually attached to your boarding pass or passport) to the baggage claim service representative.

 

Airline professionals will search for lost travel luggage using all of the resources at their disposal. In most cases international baggage search systems cope with such tasks within 24 hours. Once found, the luggage will be delivered either to you at your given address or at the arrival airport.

 

If you are worried about your luggage buy baggage insurance. 24-hour insurance baggage is for baggage loss, damage and delay. Actually Baggage insurance is included in most comprehensive policies, but it's rare to buy it separately.
